RESUMO

In rural areas, research on the environment in native (untaught) soils is important to understand the rate of pedogenesis and to prevent the problems associated with hidden huger. In this article, original data on vegetation, chemical properties and elemental and mineralogical composition of Kastanozems (Protosalic, Siltic) and Hypersalic Solonetz (Siltic) of the small gully catchment (2 ha in total) located at the NE Ergeni Upland (Western Kalmykia, Russia) were presented. Vegetation was described and cut off (to characterize an aboveground biomass) at 13 key plots of 1 × 1 m. The list of species of the small gully catchment area amounts to 23 species (predominantly, perennial herbs) belonging to 13 families and 11 orders. The main dominants are Artemisia lerchiana, A. austriaca, Festuca valesiaca and Poa bulbosa. Soils were described and sampled in 11 cross-sections and two key plots (0 - 10 cm topsoil sampling). In soil water extracts (79 samples in total), electrical conductivity (EC) and pH were measured. In soil samples, particle size distribution, soil organic carbon and CaCO3 contents, total concentration of all the macro elements, some trace (Cl, Nb, Rb, Th, Y, Zr) and potentially toxic elements (As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, and Zn) were described. Moreover, the concentration of three mobile fractions of elements (Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Ba, Cd, Pb) measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES-ICP) was presented. Geochemical indexes of weathering (R - Silica/Alumina, CIW - Chemical Index of Weathering, CIA - Chemical Index of Alteration, WIP - Weathering Index of Parker, PWI -Product of Weathering Index, Vogt Ratio, PIA - Plagioclase Index of Alteration, STI - Silica-Titanium Index, B/A - Bases/Alumina, B/R - Bases/R2O3, Si/R - Silica/R2O3, Weathering indexes WI-1 and WI-2, Si/Ses - Silica/Sesquioxides, Si/Fe - Silica/Iron, a - Potassium/Sodium, ba-1 - (Potassium-Sodium)/Alumina, ba-2 - (Calcium-Magnesium)/Alumina, Ba - (Potassium-Sodium-Calcium)/Alumina) were calculated. In 12 bulk soil samples from Kastanozems and Solonetz, mineralogy (X-Ray diffractometry, the Rietveld full-pattern fitting method for quantitative analysis) was described. Data obtained can be used for more confident identification of pollution sources and pollutants' migration routes, as well as for more effective land-use management, calculating the required doses of nutrients and for adaptation of land use.

RESUMO

European mountain grasslands are increasingly affected by land-use changes and climate, which have been suggested to exert important controls on grassland carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools. However, so far there has been no synthetic study on whether and how land-use changes and climate interactively affect the partitioning of these pools amongst the different grassland compartments. We analyzed the partitioning of C and N pools of 36 European mountain grasslands differing in land-use and climate with respect to above- and belowground phytomass, litter and topsoil (top 23 cm). We found that a reduction of management intensity and the abandonment of hay meadows and pastures increased above-ground phytomass, root mass and litter as well as their respective C and N pools, concurrently decreasing the fractional contribution of the topsoil to the total organic carbon pool. These changes were strongly driven by the cessation of cutting and grazing, a shift in plant functional groups and a related reduction in litter quality. Across all grasslands studied, variation in the impact of land management on the topsoil N pool and C/N-ratio were mainly explained by soil clay content combined with pH. Across the grasslands, below-ground phytomass as well as phytomass- and litter C concentrations were inversely related to the mean annual temperature; furthermore, C/N-ratios of phytomass and litter increased with decreasing mean annual precipitation. Within the topsoil compartment, C concentrations decreased from colder to warmer sites, and increased with increasing precipitation. Climate generally influenced effects of land use on C and N pools mainly through mean annual temperature and less through mean annual precipitation. We conclude that site-specific conditions need to be considered for understanding the effects of land use and of current and future climate changes on grassland C and N pools.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since the mid-2000s, long-term monitoring of various components of natural ecosystems under conditions of industrial pollution has been carried out in the Southern Urals. As a part of these monitoring programmes, the data on various components of biota in different biotopes, collected with different methods and in different time intervals, continue to be gathered. In addition, data collected through these monitoring programmes can also be used to study the local biodiversity of non-polluted areas. In 2012, in the vicinity of the Karabash Copper Smelter, a study of communities of small mammals was carried out, considering the heterogeneity of their habitats. Within the framework of this project, we presented a detailed description of the state of woody vegetation in the study area. NEW INFORMATION: The dataset (available from the GBIF network at https://www.gbif.org/dataset/61384edd-2d0a-437b-8cf0-ff4d2dfcc0da) includes the results of an assessment of the woody vegetation biomass at seven habitats (pine, birch and floodplain forests, reed swamp, sparse birch stand, marshy meadow and dump of household waste) of areas with different levels of industrial pollution in the vicinities of the Karabash, the Southern Urals. Karabash Copper Smelter (KCS) is one of Russia's most significant point polluters; the main components of its emissions are heavy metals, dust and sulphur dioxide. Parameters of woody vegetation (diameter at breast height, diameter at root collar level and biomass) were estimated for seven forest elements (forest stand, subcanopy (undergrowth and underwood), half-dead tree of a forest stand and four types of coarse woody debris (downed bole, fragment of downed bole, standing dead tree and stump)) at 41 sampling plots (20 at unpolluted and 21 at polluted areas) and 165 subplots (81 and 84, respectively). The dataset includes 411 sampling events (estimation events of the forest elements at sampling plots and subplots), corresponding to 5786 occurrences (estimations of the woody vegetation components) observed during July 2012. For most woody vegetation components (72%), an estimate of the above-ground phytomass is given. For each sampling event, information on the presence or absence of woody vegetation species at the considered habitats is provided (a total of 1479 occurrences with status "absent"). The dataset can be used for environmental monitoring, sustainable forest management, modelling forest productivity considering global changes, studying the structure and biodiversity of forest cover and assessing forests' carbon-sequestration capacity. In addition, the dataset provides information about different forest ecosystems under the influence of strong industrial pollution.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: This study was an endeavor undertaken to assess the biomass yield of the species that are native to a particular region characterized by saline soil, in the Irrigated Perimeter Curu-Pentecoste, in the municipality of Pentecoste-CE, corresponding to the qualities of moisture, pH and electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil. The experiment was conducted in six areas, with area 1, the one nearest to the collecting drain, the end having the highest salinity and area 6, the one furthest away from the collecting drain, the end with the lowest salinity. The factorial design with the 2 x 6 scheme was adopted, in which the first and second factors referred, respectively, to the seasons (drought and rain collection) and collection areas. In each area, eight permanent 5 x 5 m plots were demarcated, which included 8 repetitions per treatment. Within each permanent plot the quantity of forage was gathered within an area of 0.25 x 0.25 m. Soil samples were taken from a depth of 0-20 cm, and the EC, pH and soil moisture were determined. The phytomass was oven dried, after which the water content and yield were recorded. Three subsamples per area were burned in a muffle furnace to determine the percentage of ash content. The resultant high pH and EC values, typical of arid soils and related to the significantly low humidity, can cause harm to most of the crops cultivated in the Northeast of Brazil. However, the biomass yield was substantial, indicating that the species occurring there possessed adaptive mechanisms to enable them to tolerate the conditions of saline soil and water stresses prevalent there.

Abstract The effectiveness soil cover in no-till is relating to quantity and quality of the phytomass produced by crops in rotation and, its persistence over the soil depends on residues decomposition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytomass production, decomposition rate and the half-life of crops in rotation at the Subtropical region, Brazil. The study was carried out at the Agronomic Institute of the Paraná (IAPAR), in Ponta Grossa, Parana State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replicates. Winter cash crops and cover crops, single and in consortium, were evaluated in the year 2014 (wheat, black oats + hairy vetch + rye, black oats + ryegrass and black oats + blue lupine), in 2015 (canola, black oats, and black oats + hairy vetch + forage turnip) and in 2016 (barley, triticale, and triticale + black oats + rye). The phytomass was evaluating by collect three subsamples of 0.25 m2 per plot. For decomposition rate and the half-life of the crop residues, litter bags (LBs) methodology was used. A mathematical model (Q=Q0exp-kt) was used to represent the crop residues decomposition and the half-life of crop residues were obtained by the equation t1/2 = (ln2)/k. Poaceae consortia, single Poaceae and canola presented higher phytomass production when compared to Poaceae-Fabaceae consortia. The half-life for Poaceae-Fabaceae corsortia was shorter than single Poaceae.

RESUMO

The data of the researches describes the were to establish the species composition of pasture cenoses and the productivity potential of light-chestnut and meadow-chestnut soils under different climatic conditions and in different periods of the year in the Terek-Kuma lowland of the North-Western Precaspian. Two peaks of productivity of phytocoenosis have been observed: the first is - ephemeral synusia in the middle of May- early June; second - motley grass and saltworts in the second half of September. The data on receipt of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) on the soil surface and the coefficient of its use over the years and periods of the year depending on the hydrothermal conditions and dynamics of harmful salts in the soil are given. On light-chestnut soil formed cereals-wormwood, grass-cereals, wormwood-ephemeral in combination with wormwood-saltworts association, and meadow-chestnut soil - ephemera-wormwood. The phytocenosis on light-chestnut soil is inherent in the maximum species diversity - 35 species. On meadow-chestnut soil there are only 25 species. The items of the changes in the species composition of phytocenoses depending on the environmental factors are considered. The data in this article support and augment information presented in the research articles [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7].

RESUMO

It is not clear yet how extreme drought and nitrogen (N) deposition influence grassland ecosystem functions when they are considered together, especially in complex field conditions. To explore the response of the Leymus chinensis meadow ecosystem to manipulated extreme drought (45 days), N addition and their interaction, we measured leaf photosynthetic characteristics, aboveground phytomass on the community level and ecosystem C exchange in different treatments at the middle and the end of the drought period. The extreme drought treatment decreased the leaf net CO2 assimilation rate and ecosystem C exchange [gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), ecosystem respiration and net ecosystem CO2 exchange]. In contrast, the N addition treatment increased aboveground phytomass, GEP and net ecosystem CO2 exchange. The effects of N addition on the drought susceptibility of the L. chinensis meadow ecosystem varied with drought severity. The N addition treatment alleviated drought-induced suppression of CO2 exchange at the leaf and ecosystem levels in the middle of the drought period, whereas it exacerbated drought-induced suppression of the CO2 exchange and aboveground phytomass on the community level at the end of the drought period. Given that dominance by L. chinensis is a characteristic of the studied ecosystem, knowledge of the traits of L. chinensis and its response to multiple global change drivers will be crucial for predicting future ecosystem functions. Furthermore, increasing N deposition may affect the response of the L. chinensis meadow ecosystem to further droughts by increasing carbon allocation to roots and therefore root-shoot ratios.

RESUMO

Microorganisms can promote plant growth by increasing phytomass production, nutrient uptake, photosynthesis rates, and grain yield, which can result in higher profits for farmers. However, there is limited information available about the physiological characteristics of lowland rice after treatment with beneficial microorganisms in the tropical region. This study aimed to determine the effects of different beneficial microorganisms and various application forms on phytomass production, gas exchange, and nutrient contents in the lowland rice cultivar 'BRS Catiana' in a tropical region. The experiment was performed under greenhouse conditions utilizing a completely randomized design and a 7 × 3 + 1 factorial scheme with four replications. The treatments consisted of seven microorganisms, including the rhizobacterial isolates BRM 32113, BRM 32111, BRM 32114, BRM 32112, BRM 32109, and BRM 32110 and Trichoderma asperellum pooled isolates UFRA-06, UFRA-09, UFRA-12, and UFRA-52, which were applied using three different methods (microbiolized seed, microbiolized seed + soil drenched with a microorganism suspension at 7 and 15 days after sowing (DAS), and microbiolized seed + plant spraying with a microorganism suspension at 7 and 15 DAS) with a control (water). The use of microorganisms can provide numerous benefits for rice in terms of crop growth and development. The microorganism types and methods of application positively and differentially affected the physiological characteristics evaluated in the experimental lowland rice plants. Notably, the plants treated with the bioagent BRM 32109 on the seeds and on seeds + soil produced plants with the highest dry matter biomass, gas exchange rate, and N, P, Fe, and Mg uptake. Therefore, our findings indicate strong potential for the use of microorganisms in lowland rice cultivation systems in tropical regions. Currently, an additional field experiment is in its second year to validate the beneficial result reported here and the novel input sustainability.

RESUMO

This study considered the possibility of using plant community phytomass for the assessment of soil pollution with heavy metals (HM) from industrial wastes. The three-year-long field experiment was run under the regional natural meadow vegetation; the polymetallic galvanic slime was used as an industrial waste contaminant. It is shown that soil contamination primarily causes decrease of phytomass in the growing phytocenosis. The vegetation experiments determined nonlinear dependence of cultivated and wild plant biomass on the level of soil contamination; it is described by the equations of logistic and Gaussian regression. In the absence of permanent contaminants, the soil is self-cleaned over time. It reproduces phytomass mainly due to the productivity increase of the most pollution-tolerant species in the remaining phytocenosis. This phenomenon is defined as environmental hysteresis. Soil pollution by industrial waste leads to the loss of plant biodiversity. The research shows that the study of the HM impact on ecosystems is expedient given the consideration of the "soil-phytocenosis-pollutant" complex in the "dose-response" aspect. The reaction of phytocenosis on HM showing decline in phytomass leads to serious limitations in the choice of accumulating plants, because the adsorbed HM are rejected through phytomass.

RESUMO

Boreal coniferous forests act as an important sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide. The overall tree carbon (C) sink in the forests of Europe has increased during the past decades, especially due to management and elevated nitrogen (N) deposition; however, industrial atmospheric pollution, primarily sulphur dioxide and heavy metals, still negatively affect forest biomass production at different spatial scales. We report local and regional changes in forest aboveground biomass, C and N concentrations in plant tissues, and C and N pools caused by long-term atmospheric emissions from a large point source, the nickel-copper smelter in Monchegorsk, in north-western Russia. An increase in pollution load (assessed as Cu concentration in forest litter) caused C to increase in foliage but C remained unchanged in wood, while N decreased in foliage and increased in wood, demonstrating strong effects of pollution on resource translocation between green and woody tissues. The aboveground C and N pools were primarily governed by plant biomass, which strongly decreased with an increase in pollution load. In our study sites (located 1.6-39.7 km from the smelter) living aboveground plant biomass was 76 to 4888 gm(-2), and C and N pools ranged 35-2333 g C m(-2) and 0.5-35.1 g N m(-2), respectively. We estimate that the aboveground plant biomass is reduced due to chronic exposure to industrial air pollution over an area of about 107,200 km2, and the total (aboveground and belowground) loss of phytomass C stock amounts to 4.24×10(13) g C. Our results emphasize the need to account for the overall impact of industrial polluters on ecosystem C and N pools when assessing the C and N dynamics in northern boreal forests because of the marked long-term negative effects of their emissions on structure and productivity of plant communities.

In the Northeast region of the country the physic nut emerges as a promising plant for the biodiesel production, due its high oil content in seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior and seedlings quality of physic nut, depending on the dose of domestic and industrialsewage sludge. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse with five treatments, consisting in five doses for both sewage sludge (equivalent to 0, 100, 150, 200 and 300 kg total N ha-1), in complete randomized blocks, with four replications. The variables analyzed were: shoot length, root length, leaf number, stem diameter, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry mass and index of seedlings quality of Dickson. The industrial sewage sludge increases the variables related to the root until level of 200 kg total N ha-1 and domestic sewage sludge increases variables related to shoot at a dose of 200 kg total N ha-1, except for the dry matter of shoot and root system of physic nut seedlings. The industrial sewage sludge did not change the amount of dry matter of shoots of physic nut seedlings. The Dickson quality index (DQI) characterizes the seedlings of physic nut as good quality, however no significant difference was found between treatments.

The production of one tonne (t) of phytomass in dry matter (DM) of sugar cane assimilates at least 0.42 t in carbon (C) which corresponds to 1.54 t of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. This work aimed to make a survey of the quantity of phytomass from sugar cane produced in 1 ha annually, and also to examine the total C fixed and the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs), in CO2 equivalent as a consequence of nitrogen fertilization, burning of phytomass at harvest and the oxidation of fossil fuels during production, harvest, and transport of the sugar cane to the industrial plant. Based on the analysis of data, it was concluded that by harvesting the sugar cane without burning, the farmer will not emit 0.286 t ha-1 year-1 of particulate matter, 13,53 t ha-1 year-1 in eqCO2 of other gases. This will also assimilate carbon in the phytomass, generating an environmental active of 52,50 t ha-1 year-1 of eqCO2. By adding up the total fixation and the reduction of emissions, the mitigation will total 66,03 t ha-1 year-1 of eqCO2.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of perennials legumes, in N, P and K foliar concentration and maize productivity in alley cropping system, without phosphorus fertilization. Field experiments were carried out for two cycles, with legumes intercropping maize (UENF 506-8) in Field Research CCTA/UENF in Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ - Brazil. The treatments consisted of alley cropping system with the species: Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth., Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit., Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp., Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers., Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth., Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Pers. and two control treatments: sole maize with or without fertilizer NPK. Eight months after the plantation, the legumes species were pruned and incorporated in soil. Maize was sown interows legumes, in rows spaced 80 cm. New prune carried on sixty days after the first cut. In the second cycle, the crop handlings were similar to the first cycle. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with four replicates. In the alley cropping with Cajanus cajan the maize show the larger N foliar concentration, in first cycle. In the second cycle, maize+Gliricidia sepium, maize+Cajanus cajan and sole maize with NPK produced more grain than others treatments.

The aboveground biomass of a "campina" ecosystem was estimated in Roraima, in the northern portion of Brazilian Amazonia. The biomass was determined from a phytosociological inventory (1 ha) and distributed between two categories: (1) grassy-woody, composed of "herbs+lichens" (Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Eriocaulaceae, Cladonia spp), Bromeliaceae, seedlings, fine and coarse litter and, (2) woody, composed of trees and bushes. The grassy-woody category was estimated by the direct method (cutting and weighing) in 10 1-m² plots, taking advantage of transects of the inventory. The category woody was estimated by the indirect method cutting 98 individuals of different species and diameters. A model was generated to express the relationship among total dry above-ground biomass (kg), base circumference (cm) and total height (m) for the individuals in this category. The equation was applied to the 3,966 ind.ha-1 observed in the inventory. The total biomass was estimated at 15.91 t.ha-1, of which 2.20 ± 0.23 t.ha-1 (13.8 percent) was in the grassy-woody category and 13.70 ± 7.13 t.ha-1 (86.2 percent) in woody category. The tree species with the highest biomass was Humiria balsamifera (Aubl.) St. Hill. (8.43 t.ha-1), followed by Pagamea guianensis Aubl. (1.14 t.ha-1). These results are important for refining the calculations of greenhouse-gas emissions from burning and decomposition of above-ground biomass in "campina" ecosystems in the Amazon region.
